Author’s Note

Hey y'all, I'm finally caught up with Febuwhump! Yay!
This is actually one of my favorite prompts I've written.
Enjoy!

All Might was falling. His weakened body flailing uselessly in the air, and there was no one fast enough to catch him. After everyone he’d saved in his life, no one was there to save him. But that was okay. Being a hero was about giving without asking for anything in return. All Might had given them everything, and now he was dying.

Midoriya was seconds too late, falling to his knees by his hero’s bent, misshapen body. Midoriya was sobbing, tears dripping down his face and pooling on the ground along with All Might’s blood. All Might let out a weak, gurgling sound, choking on the blood filling his throat, and Midoriya sobbed harder, begging All Might to stay with them as if anyone involved had a choice in the matter.

Iida was pressing firmly on his sore chest again and again, trying to restart a heart that hadn’t stopped beating yet, pressing his broken rib into his left lung again and again. The crunching sound caused by his every movement should have been a giveaway, but All Might didn’t blame him. Iida was the only one who was actually doing something to try to save him, even if All Might knew that it was too late for him now.

Uraraka was screaming, her voice rough from how long she’d been at it, her white boots stained red with All Might’s blood. She was screaming for help, for an ambulance or a doctor, for Aizawa to come and get them out of this situation somehow. Her face was turning red from the exertion and the lack of oxygen, but she didn’t stop screaming for a second, even though no one was coming.

Bakugou was just standing there, staring with wide, horrified eyes, no doubt remembering Kamino when All Might had first fallen. All Might wished he could tell him that it hadn’t been his fault, and that this wasn’t either, but there was too much blood in his throat for him to speak, slowly suffocating him. Bakugou was shaking violently, hands clenched into trembling fists at his sides, blood oozing out from between his fingernails from overusing his quirk. It wasn’t his fault, he’d done his best. It wasn’t any of their faults, they were just kids. All Might should have protected them from this, but he had done his best, too.

And then he was falling again. There was no one there to catch him, but that was all he deserved after all the people he’d failed to save. He should have listened to Nighteye. He shouldn’t have outlived Nighteye, no one should have to outlive the young heroes they guide. At least All Might would never outlive anyone else. He would never have to lose Midoriya, or even watch as One For All destroyed him like it had everyone before them. He wouldn’t have to live with the guilt of passing down his quirk to someone who deserved better from him anymore, because All Might was dying.

Midoriya almost caught him, but he wasn’t fast enough. He fell to his knees by All Might’s weak, broken body and sobbed, begging All Might to stay with them. He was so young and so good. All Might was so proud of him, there was no one else he would rather have as his successor. Midoriya was going to be the next symbol of peace, but All Might wished he could be something else, something better. Over time, Midoriya had become like a son to him, and All Might wanted him to have everything good. He hated that One For All was all he’d had to give him.

Iida was performing CPR, despite the fact that All Might’s heart was still beating, pressing his broken rib into his left lung again and again. All Might hoped he never realized what a fatal mistake he was making, he didn’t want Iida to have to carry that kind of burden, even though All MIght didn’t blame him. He was doing so well, he was leading his class through dark times, the sort of times children shouldn’t be involved in. It might be too late for All Might, but it wasn’t for Iida. He shouldn’t have to be a leader so young, but he was, and he was a great leader.

Uraraka was screaming, begging someone to help, to come and save them, even though no one had ever been there to save her before. She had carried so much responsibility on her shoulders for so long, and All Might wished that she could see that not everything was her cross to bear. She didn’t have to be her family’s salvation, or even his salvation, all she had to be was a kid, though it was probably too late for that now. She was so strong, but she didn’t always have to be. He was so glad that she still believed that someone was coming, he wished for her sake that someone was.

Bakugou was shaking violently all over, but other than that, he wasn’t moving at all. He was hyperventilating, hands clenched into fists and bleeding from how hard he’d fought to save All Might. Now he was lost, no doubt remembering Kamino when All Might had first fallen. If All Might’s throat hadn’t been filled with blood, he would tell him again that it wasn’t his fault, none of it was. He’d done his best, he was just a kid. All of them were kids, they shouldn’t be here watching him die like this. All Might should have protected them from this, but he had done his best, too.

And then he was falling again.
